Extended Loan, Matte Black

Five works at a single point in the city, the first acquired in September 2025 and the most recent in January 2026; one of them has since been accessioned into the permanent collection. One commissioner: Police Department. The museum did not solicit any of them.

The works are exhibited in order of acquisition. Visitors will notice that the subject does not change; the museum invites them to consider what does.

1. Extended Loan, Matte Black, No. 1 — Automotive, flat black finish, dust accumulation, curbside installation. Accession 18025822. Acquired September 4, 2025. 378 days on view. The work's paint has gone matte and chalky, absorbing the midday light so completely that the body reads as a single dark mass against the bright masonry behind it. Dust has settled in pale horizontal streaks along the lower doors and rocker panel, recording the direction of prevailing weather, while the aluminum toolbox in the bed remains the one surface still capable of glare. The museum values the piece for this reversal of expectation: a vehicle built to reflect, now functioning as the least reflective object in its own composition.
2. Extended Loan, Matte Black, No. 2 — Automotive, matte coating over factory paint, chrome, stationary. Accession 18317855. Acquired October 9, 2025. 343 days on view. The matte coating is the work's governing surface: applied over the factory finish by hand, it holds every smear and palm-print that has passed across the hood, and the light lies on it without returning. Against that absorbent black, the untouched chrome of the grille and bumper reads as a separate material altogether, brighter than anything else in the frame. The clouded left headlight and the slack lower bumper cover mark where the front plane has given way while the rest holds its posture. In this position within the series the truck is seen from the front three-quarter, which sets the coating and the chrome in direct comparison.
3. Extended Loan, Matte Black, No. 3 — Automotive, flat aerosol finish over factory chrome, oxidising trim, full sun. Accession 18480638. Acquired October 16, 2025. 336 days on view. The matte finish has been applied over the vehicle's original chrome with evident haste, and the hood carries a broad blush of reddish overspray that catches the midday sun as a dull bloom rather than a reflection. Against this absorbent black surface the untouched grille and bumper read as intrusions from an earlier state of the object, and the clouded headlight lens sits between the two registers, neither bright nor dark. The front wheel is turned toward the curb, a posture the work shares with its companion pieces from the same setting. The museum values the work for the clarity with which two incompatible surfaces occupy one body.
4. Extended Loan, Matte Black, No. 4 — Cutaway shuttle bus, oxidising paint, snow accumulation, winter light. Accession 19075274. Acquired December 16, 2025. 275 days on view. The band of snow along the roofline has held its edge unbroken from the windshield cowl to the rear cap, which establishes that the body has not moved through the thaw. Low winter sun strikes the chrome grille and reflects hard off the red flanks, where the paint has dulled unevenly and lost gloss along the lower panels and around the wheel arches. Unlike its siblings in the series, this work is read against snow rather than bare asphalt, and the accumulated line does the work of measurement. The museum preserves it for that line.
5. Extended Loan, Matte Black, No. 5 — Cargo van, oxidising roof seam, unpainted polymer bumper, winter light. Accession 19327868. Acquired January 8, 2026. 252 days on view. The work is organised by the meeting of two finishes: a broad white body, dulled and salt-flecked, set against the flat unpainted black of bumper, grille surround and mirror housing, which absorb the low sun that the panels above reflect. A band of oxidation has opened along the roof seam over the windshield, the only warm colour in the composition and the clearest record of weathering the piece carries. Read against its siblings, this view is the frontal one, in which the black lower mass reads less as trim than as plinth. The museum preserves it as the series' most complete statement of that contrast.
