Impact Study in Silver

Six works at a single point in the city, the first acquired in July 2025 and the most recent in August 2025; all of them have since been accessioned into the permanent collection. One commissioner: Police Department. The museum did not solicit any of them.

The works are exhibited in order of acquisition. Visitors will notice that the subject does not change; the museum invites them to consider what does.

1. Impact Study in Silver, No. 1 — Sedan body, deformed sheet metal, curbside grass, low evening light. Accession 17957527. Acquired July 30, 2025. 414 days on view. The composition is organised by a single vertical crease in the trunk lid, which folds the panel inward and draws the chrome trim strip out of true. To the right, the taillight housing has been pushed clear of the body line and now stands slightly proud of the quarter panel, its amber and red lenses catching low light at an angle the rest of the car does not. The bumper cover below carries a long horizontal scuff and hangs loose at its outer edge, resting against nothing. The museum preserves the work as the first of several studies at this site, where the same silver surfaces continue to register force.
2. Impact Study in Silver, No. 2 — Automotive, silver paint, deformed panel, sunlight. Accession 17965226. Acquired August 2, 2025. 411 days on view. The work's rear bumper cover has separated along its right seam and folded outward, leaving a shadowed gap where the body should continue; the torn edge catches full sun and reads almost white against the darker recess behind it. Above the wheel the silver paint has creased into a shallow ridge, with a coin-sized loss revealing bare primer beneath. The tail lamp remains whole, its amber lens unclouded, which sharpens by contrast the deformation of everything around it. Read against its companion in the series, this view establishes the right-hand side as the composition's principal passage.
3. Impact Study in Silver, No. 3 — Automotive, silver enamel, deformed sheet metal, midday exposure. Accession 17965232. Acquired August 2, 2025. 411 days on view. The composition resolves around a single line of force: the trunk lid folds inward along a shallow crease that carries rightward through the quarter panel until the tail lamp assembly is lifted clear of its seating. Sun strikes the silver enamel at full strength, and the paint reads as two tones at once, bright across the undisturbed planes and grey in the troughs where the metal has gathered. A starred fracture in the rear glass, small and centred well above the deformation, registers as a separate event within the same surface. Read against its siblings in the series, this work presents the impact at its most legible, the direction of the blow still traceable in a single unbroken contour.
4. Impact Study in Silver, No. 4 — Automotive, silver paint, fractured laminated glass, stationary. Accession 17965246. Acquired August 2, 2025. 411 days on view. The radial fracture in the laminated glass is the composition's organizing event: a dense white nucleus from which cracks travel outward in uneven arcs, catching the low sun as a single hard flare near the wiper line. Below, the silver body remains largely bright, though the front bumper has pulled free of the wheel arch and leaves a dark seam where panel no longer meets panel. Read against its siblings, this view is the one in which the glass and the bumper are held in the same frame, and the museum preserves it for that conjunction.
5. Impact Study in Silver, No. 5 — Automotive, silver, fractured laminated glass, stationary. Accession 17965296. Acquired August 2, 2025. 411 days on view. The fracture at the windshield's lower center radiates outward in fine concentric rings, and direct sun enters the damaged laminate at an angle that throws a hard white flare from the point of impact. Below, the front bumper cover has pulled away from the fender in a narrow dark seam, the only other interruption in an otherwise uniform silver body still holding its polish. Read against the other works recorded here, this view is the one in which the light does the describing: the glass is legible as a form only because the sun has found it. The museum preserves the passage for that coincidence of damage and illumination.
6. Impact Study in Silver, No. 6 — Automotive, silver paint, laminated glass with radial fracture, roadside exposure. Accession 17999126. Acquired August 20, 2025. 393 days on view. The radial fracture spreads across the upper glass in a dense web of concentric and outward lines, and the low sun enters it at one point along the lower margin, producing a hard white flare that reads as the composition's brightest passage. Below, the silver body remains largely unblemished and highly reflective, holding the shapes of foliage across the door and hood, while the front bumper has pulled slightly free of the fender beside the headlight. Read against its siblings in the series, this view privileges the glass over the panelwork; the museum preserves it for the way intact paint and broken glass occupy the same surface of light.
