The Accumulating Bed

Six works at a single point in the city, the first acquired in May 2025 and the most recent in November 2025; three of them have since been accessioned into the permanent collection. One commissioner: Police Department. The museum did not solicit any of them.

The works are exhibited in order of acquisition. Visitors will notice that the subject does not change; the museum invites them to consider what does.

1. The Accumulating Bed, No. 17 — Automotive, household materials, hairpin-legged table, open-air installation. Accession 17620412. Acquired May 27, 2025. 478 days on view. The composition resolves around the wooden console table standing in the mulch behind the tailgate, its four hairpin legs splayed slightly outward and sunk where the ground is soft, so that the table reads as a plinth the truck has been backed against. Above it the bed rises past its own rail in a bank of white enamel, black polyethylene, and bent tubular steel, with a pink vacuum wedged upright at the right side. The silver body has dulled to a flat grey across the tailgate, where fine scratches fan outward from the handle. The museum preserves this work for the way its load has passed from cargo into architecture, the ground-set furniture continuing the pile downward rather than ending it.
2. The Accumulating Bed, No. 18 — Automotive, mixed household and commercial materials, orange ratchet strap, volunteer vegetation. Accession 17993080. Acquired August 16, 2025. 397 days on view. The orange ratchet strap is the work's organising line: it crosses the load diagonally from the overturned shopping cart down to the rear bumper, and the entire arrangement above the bed rails depends on that single tension. Below and in front, a stand of weeds has grown high enough to obscure the lower body and rear tyre, so that the truck now reads as continuous with the ground it rests on rather than as a thing set upon it. Against earlier works in the series the load has risen well past the cab line, and the foreground has acquired its own deposits — an air conditioner, a bag, a tarp, gloves left where they fell. The museum preserves the piece for this doubling, in which the vessel and the pavement around it accumulate at the same rate.
3. The Accumulating Bed, No. 19 — Automotive, silver, household materials, polyethylene sheeting. Accession 18018880. Acquired August 30, 2025. 383 days on view. The load rises well above the bed rail and is held by a single orange strap drawn taut across it, the wire shopping cart at the summit tipped forward so its basket opens toward the cab. Black plastic sheeting sealed over the rear window has torn into ribbons that flutter against the door, and the silver body carries a dent through the rear quarter panel with rust advancing along the lower cab seam. Read against its siblings, this remains the most vertical arrangement the location has produced; the museum preserves it for the tension between a securing strap in working order and everything it is asked to hold.
4. The Accumulating Bed, No. 20 — Automotive, silver oxidising to grey, stationary, roadside exposure. Accession 18126628. Acquired September 27, 2025. 355 days on view. The truck's silver paint has flattened toward grey across the hood and front bumper, where a film of road grime collects in the panel seams and along the upper edge of the grille. Seen from across the roadway, the work is partly screened by median shrubs whose branches reach across its lower body, so that the composition reads as a single mass of parked metal with this piece at its leading edge. Among the works gathered here it is the most forward and the most fully lit, and the museum preserves it as the point at which the row becomes legible as a row.
5. The Accumulating Bed, No. 22 — Automotive, silver oxidising, accumulated load, polyethylene sheeting. Accession 18483034. Acquired October 17, 2025. 335 days on view. The bed carries its load above the rail line, a wire frame standing upright at the cab end with a white plastic chair wedged against it and pipe stock laid flat beneath. Black sheeting over the rear side window has been drawn taut and now slackens at one corner, the only element in the composition that moves with weather. The silver body reads warm in direct sun and shows dulling along the lower panels where the paint has begun to chalk. Set against earlier works in this series, the load has risen and the vehicle has settled further toward the curb.
6. The Accumulating Bed, No. 24 — Automotive, mixed scrap metal, load exceeding bed capacity. Accession 18830621. Acquired November 18, 2025. 303 days on view. The load is organised, whether by intention or by settling, around a single white appliance panel whose four burner cutouts face outward like a relief plaque set into the side of the composition. Above it the wire shelving rises past the bed rails and holds the darker metal in place, while the truck's own silver paint runs flat and matte beneath a dented quarter panel and rust-ringed wheels. Read against its siblings in the series, this iteration stands as the point at which the contents began to determine the silhouette rather than the body containing them. The museum preserves it as the clearest instance of a vehicle assuming the formal character of its cargo.
